Last year, Mother’s Day retail sales increased drastically over 2014. One reason is that the traditional summer getaway made way for the economically-necessary “stay-cation.” Families are spending more time at home; simultaneously, Mother’s Day has enjoyed a renewed place of prominence in how we spend summer money. Billions were sold last year the week before Mother’s Day. Now don’t shake your head and say we only get a small part of that. A small part of one billion is one million. Let me spell it out: $1,000,000. Do you see the zeros? There sure are a lot of them, even if you take only a small part. How many zeroes did your salon see last year? I dare say if you didn’t pocket some cash from all those zeroes, your competition did. The numbers don’t lie. Hopefully by now you are asking yourself, “Am I ready to earn some of those zeroes?” Here are five ways to get ready:
Bundled Gifts. Do you have “combined buys” where you bundle your services together? Take care of the whole person by combining your hair, nails, and massage services into one luxurious gift. You might call it the Whole Woman package or something similar that suggests a complete care package. Gift Baskets and Bags. Do you have bag deals on your retail products? What better way to promote them than by providing an attractive basket or bag deal? Packages with nail polish, shampoo and conditioner give little bits of goodness. Give to the Giver. Don’t forget to include sales incentives for those buying for mothers. In many cases, women buy for women. Give them a pat on the back for doing for others. Offer them a special promotion on their purchases that day. Press the Easy Button. Gift certificates are the end-all gift that makes it easy for everyone. And since many people buy for more than one mom, i.e., in-laws, stepmothers, etc., why not offer a Buy One Get One ½ Off? Give One, Donate One. You could also incorporate a charitable gift opportunity. With purchase of a gift certificate, offer a promotional price on a shampoo, conditioner, etc., to go to a mom-in-need. Most communities have some type of women’s shelter or other aid provider that would benefit from charitable giving. These are just a few of the ideas we came across. With a little planning, I know you will be ready to collect your share of the zeros this Mother's Day!
